Krispy Kreme and Bush’s Chicken Teacher of the Year
Karen teaches 8th grade reading at Socorro Middle School. She was recently chosen as the Krispy Kreme and Bush’s Chicken Teacher of the Year. More than 100 area teachers were nominated by their students for the honor. We talked with Karen about the honor and more.
Hi Karen, first things first: how did you get nominated for this honor?
It was all the students. They wrote in their nominations.
How long have you been teaching?
I’ve been teaching 11 years. I’ve worked in the Socorro district for 15 years total.
What is your favorite thing about teaching?
Every day is a challenge; you don’t know what your day is going to look like. Each day is new and different in a positive way. Teaching is a calling and the best part is being able to help students change their lives. You don’t know if they’re going to talk to you about their work or an issue they’re having but it’s important to be there for them.
How do you like teaching middle school?
I like it. I was teaching high school and I wanted to add some other skills to my tool box.
What is your favorite thing about your community?
Socorro serves a lot of great people. Its very family oriented and if you know one person, you probably know their whole family (laughs). I’m alway
s touched by how involved parents are with their children’s education.
How long have you been a GECU member?
I’ve been a member for 15 years, ever since my first job
Every month TalkBox will feature a profile of a GECU member who has made a positive contribution to our community. If you know someone you would like to nominate to be featured on TalkBox contact us at email@example.com
